Childhood Obesity-Health Risks for Your Child

If your child is overweight or obese, their risks of developing certain health problems are significantly increased, especially as they grow older and gain more weight. It is essential that parents take control of their child’s habits and nutrition, and help them get their weight to a healthy range quickly, and then teach them the importance of keeping it there. Children do not know why they should not eat what they want, just that you tell them not to. As they get older, you should talk to your children about the importance of good nutrition and exercise, and the dangers of being overweight.

Children who don’t get enough daily exercise don’t develop as they should, their muscles don’t grow, their bones are weak and often break easily, and they have trouble functioning in school and focusing on activities due to lack of sleep and changes in mood and appetite. Your child will likely be cranky and moody, and you may see their grades decline as well. You should consider this a warning sign, and take immediate action! By teaching your children the importance of physical activity, you will be encouraging lifelong habits, which will help them, stay healthy, and give them a good start on their adult lives.

Along with teaching your children about the importance of physical activity, you should also teach them about the importance of good nutrition and making healthy food choices, so that they can eat healthy foods, even when you are not there to watch over them. You should teach them about the food guide pyramid, and give them an idea of the types of foods they need to eat, and the number of servings they should have of them each day. Let them know that their body needs these foods and the nutrients they provide to grow and function normally, so that they can be healthy and successful in life. It is not enough to simply tell your children to do something, as they grow older and mature, you must explain to them the reasons for eating healthy and exercising, if you expect them to form good healthy habits.

Due to the rising prevalence of childhood obesity, even young children have to worry about diabetes and other diseases early on in life. They have to learn to modify their lifestyle to manage their disease, which can be extremely difficult for children.

If you are on a tight budget, as most people today are, it can be difficult to buy the right foods for your child to eat. It is a sad but true fact that many healthy foods, like fresh fruits and vegetables, are more expensive than foods that are not good for us, so it is difficult to shop when you are on a budget. You are torn between making ends meet, and choosing healthy foods for your family.

You may have to make cuts in your budget to accommodate for the rising prices of healthy foods. Take a long hard look at your budget, and do some research on the dangers of childhood obesity, and then decide where you can cut corners to add money into your grocery budget. By looking at in terms of your child’s health, it will not seem like such a sacrifice.
